The recordings in this release are all of items that are usually powered by electricity - a Casio keyboard, a Korg midi controller, a Fender electric guitar, a digital camera, and an Xbox controller. All of these things lose most, or all, of their functionality when starved of power. By close mic'ing, or attaching piezos, I have amplified the accidental sounds of the switches, sliders, clips, cases, and textures of the objects, and have presented familiar items in an unfamiliar way. Recorded on...

"Hourse" is a collection of pieces by Alex Charles, built around loops recorded on small portable instruments (thumb pianos, violin, accordion, percussion, larynx). Each piece follows a singular direction as loops are gradually accreted live to make fascinating polyrhythmic constructions. Alex Charles performed for a long time as Thee Moths and sometimes as Thee Alex. This new project Alex describes as "simultaneously more simple and more complex" and I'm delighted to...

To ease us into summer, here is a delightfully linear-minded EP from Alex Charles (whose "Hourse" was an early "hit" for Linear Obsessional). "Trevenec" follows the sound of single bell, repeating and folding in on itself. More and more levels are added as other sounds and voice enter the mix, gradually accreting into a richly textured drone. This 15 minute live laminal piece comes with a PDF version of Alex Charles' inspirational self-published pamphlet...

Recorded by a stretch of the A12, built in east London in the 1990s, 'Near Wanstonia' is an atmospheric journey, a distillation of a rich variety of sounds. Almost twenty years ago, large scale protests against the construction of the road were ignored and Wanstonia was one of several 'free states' set up by occupying environmental activists along the proposed route. The album, although at times resonant of sadness felt, is also a resilient, optimistic and an occasionally humorous expression of...

Melodeon Improvisations and process between London and Glasgow. "Tone Chambers" is the first release on Linear Obsessional Recordings. This piece started as a series of improvisations for melodeon (diatonic button accordion) played by Richard in London and Liam in Glasgow. The recordings were then processed and reprocessed as sound files were sent back and forth - The near 20 minutes of "Tone Chambers" is the final edit by Liam, and consists of a kind of hyper-mix of the...

This is the 4th release in Linear Obsessional's Cassette Imprint.  "This record is a collection of psychoacoustic and experiential aural pieces composed without a teleological result in mind. Linear Obsessional Recordings releases the second album by prosaically named improvising trio Browne/Thompson/Sanderson. Like the first album this was recorded in the sonically vivid surroundings of a Girl Guides's Hut in Aylesbury Browne's home town.  Where the first album was a document of the trio's very first meeting, this album comes after a whole series of gigs played by the trio, and shows how they have learnt to work together and find their own language.  Browne and Sanderson have...

LO is excited to present this extraordinary collection of evocative and hallucinogenic works by the US composer Bruce Hamilton. "Drams" is a collection of sound works held together by connections to notions of dreaming. While many of the pieces are, in a sense, ambient, whether from the presence of drones or use of field recordings, my intent was more to create a kind of animated presence- a surreal and vivid soundscape. Some of these works were the result of participation in online...

A while back, Frans de Waard said in a review of my music published in his Vital Weekly that, perhaps he had been "clouded by ill-judgement" in that he had been under the impression that I was just "one of the drone boys". I was a little amused by this because, aside from my association with Drone Forest, I had (up until that time) never actually put out much music under my name that could really be categorized as pure drone music. Linear Obsessional is proud to present "Tape Loops" - the fruit several months labour by the Colorado based composer c.reider. Getting deep into the process and working with thrift-store cassettes he uses a number of radical techniques to create his tape loops, including lengthening the tape, shredding it , making new tapes from tiny fragments and reassembling them.  The resulting piece is a haunting and mesmeric meditation on the texture of sound recorded on magnetic tape and is one...

"The Earliest Humans" is an explorative guitar record, (originally released on Pearman's own "Fat Ghost" label) revelling in unconventional textures and unexpected harmonics. The album works in under-explored string sounds from over-the-bridge twangs to clock-like chimes built around the ghostly, silver-thin strains of a resonator guitar. This is post-Fahey American-primitive playing pushed through digital filters and beyond. Recorded throughout 2010 in Balham, South London....

Dirch Blewn is the project of musician David Bloor. He records and performs the instruments of Peter Blasser. Recorded live with a few overdubs this music is the sound of capacitors charging and dissipating, of gesture with no finesse, of fish guts and physical connection with wires. Flexing wood and the smell of tung oil. It’s about the drum of Tommy Lee added to some drama from Pamela, the heady mix of surfboards and silicon. "Electrical Tape" is an album of music for the Mellotron, composed and performed by Duncan Goddard of Radio Massacre International. Notes- Outside of folk music, very few instruments carry as much cultural baggage as the Mellotron. In the same way pipes and drums instantly evoke Scotland, an accordion Paris, pan-pipes South America, so the strange tones of the Mellotron instantly bring you to the 1970s and particularly progressive rock and German experimental rock. This short (thirteen minute) release is an attempt to deconstruct one of J.G Ballard's 'condensed novels' - "The Atrocity Exhibition", written in 1969. Then I read the graphic poems live with an electric bass plugged into an old guitar amplifier, and an acousmatic patch controlled with a laptop. I then divided the recording into ten tracks. -Jerome...

"Malapert and Erratic" Or "a peculiar use of language" (Notes taken from PDF booklet available with download) Current Obsessions When approached to put together a release for Linear Obsessional I initially considered providing a long structured solo soprano saxophone piece. This would have excluded the greater part of my current activity and interest. In particular my aspiration to remove performance completely and publish little instructions on the re-creation and...

A beautifully sparse and sombre meditaion on memory from two Linear Obsessional artists collaborating for the first time. "A History of Breath" is a single long work for harmonium and gong (Browne) no-imput mixer and recordings (Whitehead) The fact that the harmonium was previously the property of the great British improviser Lol Coxhill adds another of level of poignancy. Linear Obsessional is delighted to release this extraordinary solo EP of a tam-tam performance by Mark Wastell, one of the founders of the "New London Silence" movement, and a truly original presence on British improvised music scene.  "During late October 2006, Burkhard Beins and myself has been invited to undertake a short tour, entitled 'Minimal Percussion', organised by film maker and sound recordist David Reid. We presented solo and duo material at each concert. The solo...

Here at Linear Obsessional you may have noted we have a fondness for squeezeboxes and free improvisation, which is why we jumped at the chance to release an album by the amazing British accordionist Mike Adcock (once of Accordions Go Crazy amongst others). "Accord" is a collection of improvised duets with a series of musicians - and is wonderful showcase for Mike's sensitivity as an improviser and his wonderful musicality as a accordionist. Each track features Mike Adcock on piano...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present this album of two recent pieces by the legendary British folk/blues/world/avant garde guitarist Mike Cooper.  "Forbidden Delta Planet Blues" is a long form work built from over lapping loops and featuring some beautiful Hawaiian style slide guitar.  "The Pain Was Bad, But The Tuna Good" is a spellbinding live solo performance recorded at London's 100 Years Gallery. "Forbidden Delta Planet Blues" is a solo for a steel...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to release this exciting collaboration between the great British maverick slide guitarist Mike Cooper and the Chinese Sheng virtuoso Yan-Chiu Leung.  "We had never met each other before this concert. We had exchanged a few mp3s to give each other an idea of what musical oceans we both float in and then attempted to navigate our way together by free improvisation toward some distant shore. I think we arrived at a beautiful island together finally. We hope...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present this beautifully recorded collection of free improvisations by Nada. Nada is the duo of Roger Mills - Trumpet and Hervé Perez - alto sax. The improvisations that make up "Mirror Image" are revelatory, as both musicians explore a huge range of sonic textures through extended technique, and make for a fascinating and engrossing listen as they search out their common ground. Interestingly although both musicians had played together via internet...

NE Trethowan is an electronic musician who lives in Tampere, Finland. Grammostola is an exquisite collection of his works. His music is often full of dense resonances and fleeting miasmic textures- evocative, gripping and very beautiful. " I'd hope that it conveys some sense of subtle complexity - albeit neither necessarily in an expressive nor a representational sense. I'd also hope that it suggests some distance from active human composition and authorship. Possibly something like the...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present a collection of minimalist slow motion "ambient" works by the Californian composer Paul H. Muller. Despite the similarity of approach on all the tracks, this collection demonstrates the variety that Paul achieves, from the almost Wagner like chords of "Water Receding" to the submerging choir of "Bathyscape". This edition comes with 6 PDF files of composer's notes and scores. NOTES BY THE COMPOSER How These Pieces Are...

A soundtrack to the J G Ballard short story. Linear Obsessional's first release of synthesizer music (but our second of music related to the work of JG Ballard see LOR010), Paul Wady's haunting and austere work took something like 30 years to reach fruition. Finally recorded in 2009 "The Terminal Beach" is as strange, emotionally void and as powerfully compulsive as its subject matter "I found many ways out of this nihilistic world of the early 80s. But it left me with a great...

A collection of brilliantly eclectic instrumental electronic works by the British instrumentalist and composer Pete Flood, probably best known as the drummer in UK folk powerhouse Bellowhead. "Mycoworld" is beguiling, baffling and wonderful. "Fungi are just the visible fruitbodies of a larger underground organism. I don't understand what goes on underneath the leaf litter. I like to think of the invisible, thread-like mycellium spreading through the soil, forging connections with...

"this this" is an extraordinary collection of sounds made with a Raspberry Pi (the credit card sized bit of circuitry which is used to teach kids about coding). Maguire manages to create a world of microscopic sounds, clicks, whirrs and fields of electrical noise that are compellingly alien, and yet capture something of the excitement of those early forays into "glitch" music of the mid '90s. It's a whole new delicate beauty.. this this - raspberry pi, pd  th at ti me wh en...

Split CD from two young experimental artists from Teesside, UK. Plastiglomerate makes dense washes of sound using processed lo-tech analogue equipment - enveloping and engrossing studies in process and decay, using the rejected technology of previous decades.  boringcharlie. makes oddly detached keyboard music reminiscent of classical exercises or even a lounge pianist, as re-imagined by a under-programmed computer.  "Much beauty could be found in the physical world, with all its...

The second EP by this adventurous and recondite duo from Hackney, London is also their first physical release. "Pyramiden" is a series of short, severe textural pieces created entirely with the sounds of water and steel (and in a way is almost unintentional follow up to The Black Path).Enveloping and fascinating it deserves be heard, loud, through proper speakers.

Linear Obsessional is proud to release "Pulse" the debut EP from Project Mycelium, an experimental duo from Hackney, London.  Luke Brennan and Lorenzo Santangeli work from tiny minimalist fragments of acoustic samples- they explore texture and dynamics to build an extraordinary and beautiful piece of music, that seems to reference several stages in electronic music from the 50s and 60s whilst also being strikingly futuristic. credits released January 8, 2016  Produced, Recorded and...
